New 6 week beginners Class starts on Tue 13th June

July 13, 2021 @ 6:45 pm - 7:45 pm

The 6 week introduction to tai chi course starts on Tuesday 13th June at the Newbury Methodist Church on Northbrook Street, Newbury

and Friday 16th June at the Newbury and Thatcham Hockey Club on Henwick Lane, Thatcham

The world has changed dramatically in the past year and while many of the changes have had a big impact, it has put into perspective the need to make the most of life’s opportunities. If you’ve ever thought about giving tai chi a try then now is the time.  As the world moves online, it has enabled a wider audience, but at the same time it has become increasingly difficult to access the traditional arts.

Tai Chi Chuan and Modern Society

Today, our environment is continually changing, advancing forward at speed. As our environment evolves, it is society that faces an overwhelming need to adapt and accommodate these changes.

Our professions necessitate us to consistently meet deadlines and targets despite the amplifying and at the same time diversifying nature of our work. Without reservation we readily accept this phenomenon in the work place, find methods to adapt, and label it as a ‘challenge’.

We learn new skills, giving freely of our time to master our chameleon-like job descriptions, and finally when the challenge is met, we feel satisfied and accomplished with the completion of the task at hand. Challenge in our work-lives is thus an important ingredient for healthy and productive work, energizing us both physically and psychologically.

However as the speed of change increases, demands from the work environment grow further. Regardless of the willingness and determination to adapt and mould ourselves to our professions’ needs, challenges will not always be met.

Requirement surpasses capabilities, resources and needs, in the same way that unlimited demand outstrips limited supply. Compromises set in. The feeling of satisfaction turns into exhaustion, In short the stage is set for illness, and injury.

So Tai Chi Chuan demands of us qualities which we as Westerners are often deprived. It demands patience, persistence, application and a willingness to look inside as well as out for sources of stability. It necessitates trust in your chosen instructor. If you have started on a long road and cannot quite see the way, it is much easier to trust in your guide and that much more helpful if you can also extend a hand to others. The absence of competitiveness, and a need for co-operation, a willingness to concede a part of yourself to others, as well as to trust yourself with others, is a high hurdle. As Westerners instilled with a sense of individual needs and necessities, it may be a hard one to jump. But it is essential to realise that this is not a race with a definable end, but a process which is its own reward. Through it you do not possess something new, but become something new.
